The Future, Again

I love airplanes but I do think that the designers tend to go a bit crazy when they visualize the future. Check out this new video from aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

 

This video is probably wrong for a lot of reasons. The primary one is thinking that there will be that much room between seats. Every new jetliner invented since the first one has shown loads of personal space in the marketing ads. The truth is we are packed in like sardines. It’s just economics. The plane costs x. The fare you pay is x divided by the number of people on board. Less people means more expensive.

So either flying is going to be the providence of the rich (as it was in the 30s, 40s, and 50s) or else this is wrong.

For some perspective, let’s look at the promo video for the first Boeing jetliner, the 707.

Yep, it looks just like the last time I flew. lol

  1. Probably the biggest lie in that whole second video is when the captain said the weather in London is clear.
