Virtual Teachers Take Another Step Closer

H/T Gizmodo

Apparently there is this band in Japan composed of 7 young girls. They have lots of fans but there is something different here. Watch this commercial they did.

The band just announced that they only have 6 band members. The seventh (the girl in the middle at the end) is actually a composite of the other 6 girls.

This video shows how they did it.

One of the main arguments I hear about why computers can never replace teachers is that teachers can make an emotional connection with their students. Well what is interesting with this technology is it was able to fool a lot of people into forming an emotional connection with somebody who doesn’t exist.

Once this is coupled with decent artificial intelligence, I think it will become a lot more difficult to tell what is real vs what is artificial.

I’m 38 years old. I therefore predict in my lifetime the following:

  1. We will get to a point where you won’t be able to tell real from virtual. (but it won’t matter)
  2. Most learning will be done via personalized AI tutors. People will only get involved when needed.
  3. Most people will be teachers in their spare time.
  4. Very few people will make a career as a teacher.

I think these things will happen in the next 20 years. This must sound really drastic to some, but that’s the speed things are moving now. It’s like a huge storm or something! 🙂
