Google Is Buying Motorola

Wow this is huge.

If the deal is approved, Google just got into the phone hardware business. I have written before that Google Wants Every Student to Have A Smartphone, now we can see just how badly they want that.

The driving force for this is simple. Apple doesn’t like Google and will eventually lock them out of the iPhone ecosystem. The Android phone market is doing pretty well but it’s limited because each carrier and manufacturer tends to cripple their phone to make more money. Google makes money when people are online so they need more people online.

I predict Google won’t be aiming for the high end smart phone market here. Apple already has that locked up for now. Instead, I think Google will be trying to bring smart phones to everyone else.

The day that every child in your classroom has a smart phone just got significantly closer.

Again, I say wow!

    • Google is acquiring the handset division of Motorola, Motorola Mobility, for $12.5 billion. This means Google could soon officially in the hardware business.

    • the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a dedicated Android partner, will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.
