Reputation Is Increasing In Importance For Jobs

Do you remember the good old days where a person could get a job as long as they had a degree and weren’t an idiot in the interview? The Internet is making our world more transparent. According to this infographic and article, 1 in 5 business are already using social media to research job applicants.

In addition, the new generations that have grown up with the Internet use it all the time to find out more about people. This applies to their choice of college and even instructor. As more and more students look online for lower cost options, their choices are expanding all the time.

As I have said before, reputation is the currency of the Internet.

I came across this video from TEDx ManhattanBeach. In it, Jon Bischke talks about how learning is changing via constant assessment. Interestingly he also talks about how our online reputation is changing the way things work. I have speculated before that the whole concept of a degree might go away as other factors of assessment come into play.

It’s 11 minutes long and I think worth the time.

  1. I want to comment on something Bischke mentioned in the video. He said the pace at which a student learns could become a factor in the assessment of an individual. Well, I say the pace doesnt matter and the different criteria being used to assess an indivdual is in the early stages so is a bit all over the place. What I want to know is how are these assessments done in other cultures? Other continents? Are they practical? What is the sucess rate? Have you done any posts about this topic? If not, I would be very interested in hearing from you.
