Speed Jump For Wifi Will Pay Off In Classrooms

It looks like the next generation of Wifi equipment is going to be rolling out this year. This new standard seems to be three times faster than what we have now.

It does this by using a higher frequency. The problem with this is the range is shorter. Still, it should be awesome for the classroom where the range is short but bandwidth requirements are high. Perhaps this will allow a classroom of students to all access video? Naturally the school’s net connection will start to be the limiting factor at that point.

Even so, this is good progress! If I could give advice to schools on their tech budgets, I would worry less about devices in the classroom and work on the network infrastructure. This will prepare schools for the inevitable onslaught of Bring-Your-Own-Devices.
