My friends over at Edudemic posted a great story about a teacher diving into Gamification in a big way. In a nut shell, he created a game engine that he can run in class. His students are players and they can earn points by completing class challenges. They take on roles such as mages or warriors and fight against the teacher! This reminds me a lot of Dungeons and Dragons. 🙂 If the student does well, they can earn “powers” they can use in class. An example is being able to eat in the classroom. If they do poorly, they take damage. Enough damage and they could end up in detention.
If you look closely the mechanics are very similar to what happens in the regular classroom but by putting a game around it, you engage the students more.
The teacher in question has started a Kickstarter campaign to try to develop his idea further and get it into more classrooms.
Here’s a link to the Kickstarter page where they is a video explaining how the whole thing works. Very cool! This is a great example of the Internet empowering creative individuals.
