I have always found it ironic that in order to teach children about the world, we lock them away from it in a school. Fortunately, modern communication technology is beginning to break down the walls of the classroom.
My favorite are the ones at the North and South Poles. Many of the other places on that list I could go to, but I doubt I will get to go to the Poles. :)
The next step would be to have telepresence robots that you can drive around. Here’s a video of a workplace telepresence systems. You can expect these to drop in price as time goes on.
Imagine how immersive an experience that would be! Couple that with low cost Virtual Reality headsets and you can present a wonderful learning experience. Imagine assigning homework to go drive a robot at the North Pole and take screenshots or measurements of something. :) It’s not that far off now I think.
