Here’s a graph of units sold of eBooks. H/T io9.com
What this shows is within just a few years the whole market has shifted. It is possible for people to publish their own books for practically no cost. This means the whole business has flattened out into writer and reader. There has to be no middleman. This is Disaggregation. In fact I wrote about just this in Deconstructing Disaggregation Part 2 a few years ago.
It won’t be too much longer before certain books can be automatically created. Probably more non fiction first but eventually even fiction books. Then will come movies that you can interact with that tell an open ended story.
And once that technology is developed it won’t be too long before somebody starts authoring their own curriculum and selling it online. Of course this is already happening all over but it isn’t the primary way we learn yet. I’ve stopped buying paper books and pretty much just buy ebooks. Why? They are cheaper and I always have them with me. I imagine learning materials would have the same value. It’s all driven by economics and creativity.
